Reclaim Your Power : Why You're Not Responsible for Others' Expectations
Have you ever felt the crushing weight of trying to be someone else's ideal? It's a heavy burden, isn't it? The truth is, you are not responsible for other people's expectations, their emotions, or how they perceive you. This isn't just a liberating thought; it's a fundamental truth for living an authentic life.
When we strive to fulfill everyone else's desires, we slowly but surely drift away from our true selves. We abandon our own aspirations, our own calling, and our own expectations. Often, what others project onto you is simply what they secretly wish for themselves. They're not truly seeing you; they're seeing a reflection of their own unmet desires.
This constant striving to please can leave you feeling stuck, unable to pursue what truly resonates with your soul. You might be working tirelessly to meet the standards set by parents or society, only to find that your efforts go unappreciated. Instead of applause, you're met with more demands, an endless piling up of expectations that never truly acknowledges your struggles or your triumphs. Remember, you are not responsible for how people treat you, their emotions, or how they expect you to be. As I explore in my blog post, “Tune In: Let Your Intuition Guide the Way,” true freedom comes from aligning with your inner compass.
THE POWER OF SILENCE: SPEAK LESS , COMMAND MORE
In our noisy world, there's a profound strength often overlooked:
SILENCE
It's often said that the less you speak, the more your words matter. Think about it: the loudest person in the room rarely holds the most power. In fact, they're usually the least in control, desperately trying to assert their importance. If you're constantly striving to be memorable or brilliant in conversations, you risk becoming insignificant.
Silence is strength. It's the ability to truly listen, to absorb, and to then respond with valuable, insightful contributions. Most people don't genuinely listen; they're too busy formulating their next statement, thinking about how smart they'll sound. This prevents them from truly digesting what's being said, leading to disconnection and missed opportunities for genuine understanding.
Silence creates space for curiosity. People love to share their experiences and answer thoughtful questions. By cultivating the art of listening and pausing before you speak, you open the door to deeper connections. It makes it easier to say something meaningful, to truly engage, and to command attention when you do speak.
If you complain about every little thing, your words quickly lose their impact. People begin to associate you with negativity, seeing you as an “empty vessel making the loudest noise”.
Speak less, complain less. Save your complaints for when they truly matter, for the real issues that demand attention. This ensures that when you do voice a concern, it gets heard. Direct your grievances to close friends who genuinely listen, or to those who share similar experiences and can offer empathy or solutions. Sharing pain with outsiders rarely helps; it often dissipates your energy without resolving anything. Instead, discuss your problems with the people directly involved, whether it's a friend, lover, or family member. Talk about your doubts, your displeasures, and your joys with them. This is where true resolution and connection happen.
THE LIBERATING POWER OF LETTING GO
Life is dynamic, and sometimes things simply don't work out. When something no longer serves you, learn to let go. Ignoring what isn't working, clinging to what has already slipped away, or desperately trying to hold onto a life that no longer fits you will only drag you down.
Clinging to what no longer serves you doesn't preserve it; it poisons you. Love can turn into resentment, and hope can morph into suffering. If you don't release what's holding you back, you risk being trapped or even broken by the very thing you're desperately trying to preserve. Embrace the question: If you let go of expectations for others, who would you truly be? The answer often reveals your most authentic self.
TRUE UNDERSTANDING: PRESSURE REVEALS CHARACTER
We often believe we know someone when they're at their best, but true understanding emerges under pressure. Think of an orange: you don't know what's inside until you squeeze it. The juice that comes out, whether sweet or bitter, reveals its true nature.
Similarly, you can never fully know someone based solely on their good moments. Wait until they're sad, angry, or stressed. That's when their true colors emerge, when their unfiltered reactions and core behaviors are revealed. It's only then that you can truly decide if that's what you're willing to live with. Someone happy and seemingly perfect on a good day might be completely different when faced with challenges. You don't truly know who someone is until they're having a bad day.
YOU GET WHAT YOU ACCEPT: STANDING UP FOR YOURSELF
Here's a hard truth: you don't get what you deserve; you get what you accept and protect. If you genuinely believe you deserve respect, why would you tolerate disrespect? If you desire a better partner, why would you accept behavior that falls short of your standards?
No one will inherently notice your hard work or value your worth unless you make it clear. Learn to stand up for yourself. You get what you fight for, or you settle for what you're given. This can be challenging, especially when people around you prefer the “old version” of you—the one they could control, the one that made them feel better. Understand that growth is a threat to those who benefited from your smallness.
Listen to what people have to say , but most importantly , protect your energy . Your journey is yours alone , and your self-worth is non-negotiable.
At the end of the day, trying to be who others expect you to be is the quickest way to lose yourself. You were never meant to be someone else’s blueprint. You are not responsible for their hopes, their disappointments, or how they choose to see you.
Your energy is sacred. Protect it. Your silence? It’s not weakness — it’s wisdom. Speak when it matters. Let go when it’s time. And when life gets noisy, tune into your intuition. That’s where the real guidance lives.
